Two approaches
Splitting evenly is quick and works when everyone ordered similar amounts. But when one person ordered steak and another ordered a salad, "evenly" is unfair — and repeated unfairness breaks the habit of going out as a group.
The alternative: each person pays for what they ordered, with shared items (appetizers, wine) divided among those who consumed them.
Add the tip before dividing
Common mistake: split the bill and have each person "add something" for the tip — that way the tip always comes up short.
The right way: add the tip to the total first (10% is standard in most of Latin America; check if it's already included as "service") and divide the total including tip.
The item-by-item method
For a fair split without mental math:
- One person pays the total (happy server, table cleared).
- Take a photo of the receipt with the items.
- Everyone marks what they ordered; shared items are split among those who marked them.
- Tax and tip are split proportionally based on what each person consumed.
Collect payment without awkwardness
The hardest part isn't calculating — it's collecting. A link with the breakdown ("you consumed this, you owe me this") and payment details takes the personal sting out of it: you're not "asking" your friend for money, you're sending them the bill.
Do it in 30 seconds
SplitPaw does exactly this workflow: you scan the receipt with AI, share a link and everyone marks their items from their phone — no app installation or account creation needed. Balances are recorded in the group and you collect with a payment link.
